It's a Friday morning, I woke up to a DM from a new friend.
“Do any Brands/Stylists wanna dress Sextile for this big show at The Fonda? It’s our record release!”
Fast forward to several chains of DMS, texts, and emails, and I’m on the phone with Brady Keehn, Melissa Scaduto, Cameron Michale, and their drummer Lia at nine in the evening after their band practice.
“Sorry, it's kinda loud out here we’re in this sketchy parking lot! Let's do this on my cell, Brady has this burner phone,” chimes Scaduto poking fun at Keehn’s Samsung Galaxy Z Flip.
“Hey, why do you have a New York cell phone number? Are you my Sister?!” Keehn asks me.
“No (Laughs,) I used to live in New York, I’m your alien cousin!” I reply back.
Within a short span of time in discussing looks, logistics, and referencing an obscure film from 1984, the band’s genuineness and excitement radiates off the telephone line, we’re equally as wired to work together. One thing leads to another, and I wind up styling them for their tour kick-off show at the Fonda and interviewing them thereafter.
It’s been nearly 5 years since Sextile has delivered a full-length record. Now as a reinvigorated band that is newly signed to esteemed underground label Sacred Bones, they have released their junior album PUSH.
PUSH is quite literally a ‘push n pull’ of sonic landscapes with dance at the forefront. Spanning across Sextile’s LP are elements of jungle, trance, house, and electro while simultaneously incorporating left-field elements of thrashing guitars that leap into the mix. Additionally, we see an inverse: heavy punk licks paired with erratic 170 bpm breakbeats. These sonic interjections may seem abrupt, but upon closer inspection, you can really hear the way they seamlessly drift and splice through one another, synthesized into a reverberation harking back to early 2000’s hyper charged acid-pop. Mellower tracks on the record conjure the beauty and bloodshed of the past, its thrills and perils we must face in our pains of growing up.

PUSH presents a universe where Screamadelica meets an Underworld entrenched dance record, whilst still maintaining a sound true to post-punk origins. Sextile is revitalizing their sound via these nods to electronic dance and 90s indie.
Punk has been injected with acid and it’s here to stay.
